A free course in basic green building concepts that can lead to national certification as a LEED Green Associate will be held March 19 in Ardmore.
The course, Green Building Science, LEED 201: Core Concepts and Strategies, will be taught from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. by Dr. Doug Weirick and Dr. Guy Sewell, professors of environmental health science at East Central University in Ada. An additional 16 hours can be completed outside the classroom time to receive the certification.

The regional winners of junior high and high school science projects and research papers will compete for prizes beginning Thursday [MARCH 8] at the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair and the Oklahoma Junior Academy of Science held annually at East Central University.
Cash, science-related prizes and scholarships will be awarded in the two competitions.

A new scholarship honoring the late R. Burl Harris, a long-time Ada resident, has been awarded to an East Central University student majoring in legal studies.
Tamra Albritton of Roff, a junior, is the first recipient of the R. Burl Harris Legal Studies Centennial Scholarship that was established through the ECU Foundation Inc.
The scholarship was funded by donations after Harris’ death in December 2010 and was completed to the $15,000 Centennial level by his wife, Jan Harris.

The East Central University Symphonic Band and the ECU Wind Ensemble will present a winter concert Thursday [MARCH 8] with a program ranging from pieces inspired by a Korean folk song, a Dylan Thomas poem and a stuck harmonium key to marches and a 1978 hit single by Earth, Wind & Fire.
The free concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ataloa Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. Dr. Allen Correll, ECU director of bands, will conduct both groups.
Posted on: 24 February, 2012Alpha Chi, a national honor society that accepts only the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors, recently initiated 71 new members and installed new officers at East Central University.Alpha Chi members must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5.Glenn Ronning of Ada was elected president of the Oklahoma Gamma chapter at ECU. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and two of his three children also attend ECU.
Posted on: 24 February, 2012A national study to find the safest college and university campuses in the United States has found that East Central University ranks among the safest.
StateUniversity.com, a leading website for college information, has ranked East Central University No. 2 in Oklahoma for campus safety, based on incidents of campus crime as reported in 2011by campus safety officials. ECU ranked behind only first-place Murray State College in nearby Tishomingo.
Nationally, ECU ranked No. 44 out of the 450 schools included in the study.

A Shawnee businesswoman has found a rather unusual way to help the community.
Julie Landes volunteers her time as a mediator through Early Settlement Mediation, a process that allows both sides in a dispute to develop an acceptable resolution without going to court.
Early Settlement, part of the Oklahoma Dispute Resolution Program, provides an important service to local communities throughout Oklahoma in both community and court-related disputes. The resolution program is funded by the court system and trains volunteers such as Landes to act as mediators.
