    Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Natasha Trethewey and recent Indiana poet laureate Norbert Krapf will be featured during the seventh annual Scissortail Creative Writing Festival April 5 – 7 [THURSDAY-SATURDAY] at East Central University in Ada.

    They will be among more than 50 regional, published and emerging authors who will read and discuss their work from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on April 5 and 6 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 7. Each day is broken into several sessions. All sessions are free and open to the public.

    A new Oklahoma Business Week summer camp at East Central University will introduce up to 100 current Oklahoma 10th or 11th grade high school students to both the world of business and a college campus. Participants in the camp, from July 8-13, also have a chance to win prizes and scholarships to ECU.

    Students from Latta, Bartlesville, Grove, Miami, Moore, Tulsa and Vici were the grand prize winners in the 2012 Oklahoma State Science & Engineering Fair and the Oklahoma Junior Academy of Science State Meet held annually at East Central University in Ada.

    A combined 256 projects were in the competition for cash prizes and other awards.

    In the OSSEF, the $500 Best of Fair Award in Division I (grades 10 to 12) went to Mishana Ellison, a sophomore at Latta High School, for her project, “An examination of plant stomatal response to changing atmospheric conditions.”

    Dr. Robin Murphy, assistant professor of English at East Central University, will discuss her book and a chapter she co-wrote for another book about counterculture icon Joss Whedon on Tuesday [MARCH 13] at ECU’s Linscheid Library.

    The discussion and book signing will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. in the atrium on the library’s second floor, sponsored by Linscheid Library Academic Friends.

    A free class from March 20-22 [TUESDAY-THURSDAY] at East Central University will introduce workers to the process of designing and installing a small photovoltaic system, or solar panel system, suitable for a private residence.

    The Photovoltaic Systems Technology Technician course prepares students for employment with contractors who install alternative energy systems such as solar panels. Participants will learn about electrical concepts used in design systems and how to assess solar resources and evaluate potential installation sites.

    Chris Scoles (from left) of Ada, Heath Holt of Ada and Kaitlin Moore of Marietta, members of Collage, East Central University’s dance ensemble, will perform in the gala performance March 15 [THURSDAY] at the national convention of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in Boston. They will perform “Within Me,” a dance choreographed by Kelsey Creed, an ECU student who graduated last December. They were selected from a video of the work submitted to AAPHERD for a blind review by Dr. Victoria Dansby, coordinator of ECU’s dance program.
