    William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet will be presented by the East Central University Theatre Department, Friday-Saturday, Oct. 13-14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dorothy I. Summers Theatre.

    The familiar story is about the long feud between the Montague and Capulet families. The feud cases tragic results for the two main characters in the play, Romeo and Juliet. Hatred, revenge with love and a secret marriage lead to the young star-crossed lovers growing up early and dying tragically.

    Roses and rose pedals lined the foot of the door outside Samantha Dillehay’s office Monday at East Central University’s Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

    Photos - some all-smiles, some posed and some silly - adorned the door as well as notes from heartbroken, yet inspired students.

    One of the notes says “Sam, you will be missed by everyone in mass comm. You made me believe in myself and reassured me I had chosen the right major. Thanks for being an amazing role model.” Another simply says, “Thank you for pushing me to be who I now am.”

    The East Central University Music Department is presenting its 12th Annual ECU Faculty, Students and Friends Composer Concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 9, in the Ataloa Theatre of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

    The concert is free and open to the public.

    W.T. Skye Garcia, instructor in the ECU Music Department, will serve as composer and concert series coordinator.  ECU student Christopher L. Bragg, of Sulphur, will perform a piece he created - Mountain’s Rain - on the piano.

    Entries are being accepted for the East Central University Alumni Association’s Homecoming Golf Tournament on Friday, Oct. 27, at the Oak Hills Country Club in Ada. The tournament benefits the Student Alumni Grant Program and Alumni Scholarships. The cost is $125 per golfer. A lunch for all paid golfers will be held at 11:30 a.m. and the tee-off time is set for 1 p.m. You can register online at alumni.ecok.edu or by phone at 580-559-5651.     Thirty elementary students recently learned how to start a business when they participated in East Central University’s Junior Business Club.

    The three-week academy, sponsored by ECU’s Stonecipher School of Business, guided Ada’s Willard Elementary School students into a business venture of lemonade stands. The students, divided up into six companies, learned how to create a business plan, obtained a loan to start up the business, built and painted their stand and sold lemonade at the Tigers’ home football game on Sept. 9.

    Entries are being accepted for East Central University’s 2017 Homecoming Parade, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28, at noon along Main Street in Ada. Entries are open for floats (competitive and non-competitive), decorated car or truck, marching bands and walkers. The theme for this year’s homecoming is “Oh! The Places Tigers Will Go!” Registration can be done online on the official ECU website at https://www.ecok.edu/student-development/campus-involvement/cab/homecoming .

    Country music band Asleep at the Wheel will take the stage on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in East Central University’s Ataloa Theatre of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

    The venerable Western swing band has been performing since 1970 and has won 10 Grammy Awards and released over 20 albums. Their highest-charting single “The Letter That Johnny Walker Read,” peaked at No. 10 in 1975, with their next highest being “House of Blue Lights” at No. 17 in 1987 (reached No. 12 on the Canadian charts).
