    East Central University’s Dr. Mara Sukholutskaya recently received the Excellence in Classroom Teaching Award (Post-Secondary) at the Southwest Conference on Language Teaching at the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City.

    The recipient of the award goes to an educator, who teaches languages other than English and has contributed significantly to the teaching of second languages and to the profession. The instructor’s impact of the contribution must be significant in terms of the influence the individual has made on student learning.

    Enhancing the experiences of young women in collegiate athletics is near and dear to the heart of Billie Floyd.

    A longtime educator, State Senator and civic leader, Floyd is serving as honorary chair of East Central University’s new “Campaign for Excellence in Women’s Athletics.”

    The purpose of the campaign is to provide additional funding for ECU’s Women’s Athletics as funds raised will be kept at the ECU Foundation, Inc.

    ADA – New East Central University President Katricia G. Pierson poses with retiring ECU President John R. Hargrave as Pierson officially took over the university’s presidency in a community-wide reception on Tuesday, Feb. 28. “I’ve got optimism because we have the best and brightest faculty in the state of Oklahoma and we have a staff that gives tirelessly, tirelessly to make this place wonderful for one another and our students,” said Pierson.  Hargrave is pleased with Pierson being his successor. “I’m very excited to see her carry on the campus traditions and programs at ECU.

    Featuring the music of The Beatles, the East Central University Jazz Ensemble will present its annual Punch and Pie Jazz Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, in the Ataloa Theatre of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public. The program includes: Blackbird, Hey Jude, Lucy in the Sky, Can’t Buy Me Love, All My Loving, Hard Day’s Night, Here, There and Everywhere and Norwegian Wood. The ECU Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Allen Correll.

    In an effort to inspire business leaders of tomorrow, East Central University will conduct its annual Oklahoma Business Week, June 4-8.

    The week-long, award-winning summer camp is for high school students, grades 9-12, to gain a first-hand experience in the world of business. The event includes business simulations, competitions, prizes and college scholarships.

    Those high school students wishing to participate may take advantage of the early registration of $150 until March 2. The regular registration deadline is April 2 at $175 and the late deadline fee is $200 by May 4.

    ECU SCREENS concludes its Seventh Annual Foreign Film Festival with Where Do We Go Now? on Friday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. in the Raymond J. Estep Multimedia Center of East Central University's Bill S. Cole University Center.

    Winner of the audience award at the Toronto Film Festival, Where Do We Go Now? will be introduced by Dr. Terrie Becerra, assistant professor in East Central University’s Department of Political Science, Legal Studies and Sociology.

    Admission is free and open to the public.

    For the first time a mock trial team from East Central University competed in the College Mock Trials Great Plains Regional Competition, Feb. 10-12, at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.

    The event was conducted by the American Mock Trial Association.

    Ada attorney Preston Draper, an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science, Legal Studies and Sociology, served as the coach for the 10-member ECU team.
