    The McNair Scholars Program at East Central University is receiving funding for five more years, it was recently announced.

    The McNair Scholars Program, located on the ECU campus since 1991, prepares qualified undergraduates for entrance to doctoral degree programs in science and math. The goals of the program are to increase the number of first-generation, low-income and/or underrepresented students in doctoral degree programs, and ultimately, to diversify the faculty in colleges and universities across the country.

    Outstanding academic work during the 2013 spring semester has earned listings on the President’s Honor Roll and Dean’s Honor Roll for students at East Central University.

                The President’s Honor Roll is reserved for students who earned A's in all their courses for a perfect 4.0 grade point average. The Deans’ Honor Roll lists students who have at least a 3.33 grade point average with no grade lower than a C. At least 12 credit hours must be completed successfully during the semester to be included on either honor roll.

    Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby (right) receives East Central University’s 2013 Distinguished Philanthropist Award on behalf of the Chickasaw Nation from ECU President John R. Hargrave during the recent Evening of Honors and Recognition. The Chickasaw Nation has been a vital partner with ECU, particularly with the current construction of the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center and sponsorship of the new football field turf at Norris Field. Anoatubby has served as Governor of the Chickasaw Nation since 1997 and was lieutenant governor from 1979-97.

    In an effort to reduce motor vehicle-related deaths and injury, the leading killer of children under 14, Safe Kids Oklahoma, East Central University’s Smart Start South Central program and the Pontotoc County Health Department is sponsoring a car seat checkup event on Wednesday, May 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pontotoc County Health Department.

    Philip Todd (center), assistant professor for mass communications at East Central University, received a graduate paper award at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics in San Antonio, Texas in March.

    East Central University student Brent Biddy, of Seminole, was chosen to represent ECU at Research Day, held recently at the State Capitol in Oklahoma City. Twenty undergraduate students representing 15 Oklahoma colleges and universities presented competitive scientific research posters to the State Legislature and the public during this annual event sponsored by Oklahoma Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the National Science Foundation.
