Dr. Rebecca Nicholson-Weir, East Central University assistant professor of English and Languages, was recently awarded the 2016 South Central Modern Language Association Prize for Best Paper in Historical, Literary and/or Cultural Studies.
Her paper was entitled “Time and Place Will Have Their Say: Experimental Narration in Zora Neale Hurston’s Dust Tracks on a Road.” This essay examines Hurston’s autobiography in the context of modernist experimental writing.

The East Central University community is mourning the loss of one of its own.
Twenty-year-old nursing student Nisha Karki passed away in the early morning Wednesday, Nov. 16.
It was believed that Karki had a pre-existing condition.
“This is a tragic loss for the ECU community. Our thoughts remain with Nisha’s family and friends,” said ECU President John R. Hargrave.

ECU SCREENS continues its season with the fastest-selling production in British theatre history: “Hamlet,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in the Raymond J. Estep Multimedia Center of East Central University’s Bill S. Cole University Center.
Open to the public, the screening is $5 for students and $10 for members of the community.

East Central University is conducting enrollment for concurrent students, beginning Monday, Nov. 14, and first-time freshmen starting Tuesday, Nov. 15, for the 2017 spring semester. ECU offers more than 70 degree programs. Master’s programs are also available, including two new degrees in master of management in business and a water policy resources and management program. Making connections and staying connected is what Dr. Gerald Williamson is about.
Williamson, who has worn many and various hats during his 38-year stay on the East Central University campus, was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society Hall of Fame on Oct. 24, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

The East Central University Department of Music and Department of Communication and Performance Studies will present a choral concert on Monday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ataloa Theatre of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.
The concert, which will feature ECU Showtime, The University Chorale and The ECU Singers, is free and open to the public.
The University Chorale will be performing their “Golden State Trophy Program,” the selections they will be taking to the international competition in Monterey, California, Nov. 20-24.
