    High academic performance during the fall semester has earned listings on the President's and Deans' Honor Rolls for students at East Central University.

    The East Central University community will watch history in the making with the inauguration of the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama.

    On Tuesday [Jan. 20] ECU will host a viewing of the inauguration on a large projection screen in the Estep Multimedia Center in the University Center. The viewing is free of charge. The doors will be open from 9 a.m. until noon. The swearing-in ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m.

    Approximately 150 members of the Oklahoma Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (OKRID) are expected at East Central University Friday and Saturday [JAN.16-17] for their biannual meeting.

    OKRID is the statewide organization for interpreters for the deaf, said Janna Byrd, ECU assistant professor of human resources and OKRID's 2008-09 vice president.

    After two years of college, Rick Hooper decided he was headed in the wrong direction.

    He wanted a different type of degree, so he left East Central University and moved to Irving, Texas, to complete a two-year program in electronics.

    The Centennial Celebration marking East Central University's 100th birthday in 2009 is officially underway.

    The university was established as East Central State Normal School on March 25, 1909. A celebration was held in Ada when then-Gov. Charles N. Haskell signed the legislation, said Dr. Duane C. Anderson, ECU's interim president.

    Motorists approaching the East Central University campus may do a double-take the first time they see a giant silhouette of a horse looming where houses once stood in the 800 block of East 12th Street.

    Students in the Sculpture II class at ECU built the large-scale silhouette as the first installed work in a sculpture garden that has begun taking shape in the heart of the new Arts District of Ada.

    Adults in Ada can sample a free yoga class Monday [Jan. 12] at East Central University. The Center of Continuing Education & Community Services will offer the one-hour class at 5:45 p.m. in Science Hall, Room 318.

    No experience or equipment is necessary for the free class.

    Two classes of sports and games for children in the gym and the swimming pool will begin next week [JAN. 12 AND JAN. 13] at East Central University.

    The Gym/Swim Class for ages 5-12 begins Monday [Jan. 12] and will offer physical activities in the McBride Gymnasium during the first half and finish with a variety of aquatic sports and games in the McBride swimming pool.
