    Thirty-five youngsters from Seminole and Hughes Counties, all members of the Seminole Nation, learned about diabetes prevention and overall healthy living at a camp July 19-23 at East Central University.

    Staff members at East Central University have won five awards for their work from the Oklahoma College Public Relations Association. The highly competitive contest drew 405 entries from most of the state's public and private colleges and universities.

    William R. (Rudy) Lewis has been named acting director of university advancement at East Central University, effective July 1.

    The Advancement Office is responsible for alumni relations, event planning and the President's Circle as well as raising funds largely from alumni and friends of the university as well as corporations and foundations. Those gifts establish scholarships and provide funding for a variety of unmet needs of the university.

    Dr. Shelley Ross Hamby, director of the Valley View Foundation at Valley View Regional Hospital, will become assistant to the president of East Central University on Sept. 1.

    President John Hargrave made the announcement today [JULY 15]. Hamby will take over the duties of his assistant, Martha Skinner, who will retire Aug. 31.

    Hamby will work part time at ECU and VVRH through Aug. 31.

    An award-winning Oklahoma City television producer and station manager will be honored at the dedication of the new state-of-the-art television studio named in his honor at East Central University.

    Students at East Central University need to confirm their permanent mailing addresses with the university so they can receive their new ECU Tiger Cards - the debit cards that will be necessary for students to receive any refunds, including financial aid and other student disbursements.

    ECU needs students' current addresses because the cards will be mailed to them later this month in green envelopes.

    Fifteen children's lives are safer, thanks to a Car Seat Safety Event in June at East Central University's Child Development Center.

    Car seats supplied by Smart Start South Central were available to all parents at the center as long as they participated in a car seat safety check by local technicians trained by OK SafeKids. Ten new car seats were installed in parents' cars, and five more were checked and found to be adequate.
