    Performing at the official launch ceremony in November of the new quarter honoring the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur was the East Central University Clarinet Ensemble. The ensemble performed “Chickasaw Fanfare,” a piece director Michael Whitworth composed for the ceremony, as well other ceremonial music and pieces from its fall concert. The quarter is the 10th coin in the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters Program. Its reverse side depicts the area’s scenic Lincoln Bridge which was dedicated in 1909.

    A three-day class on Photovoltaic Systems Technology will be offered Tuesday through Thursday [DEC. 20-22] at East Central University.  There is no charge for the free class which is sponsored by The Southern Oklahoma Green Jobs Training Consortium.

    Participants in the Train the Trainer workshop held at the Johnston-Douglas Building by the Chickasaw Nation Child Development Center listen to one of the speakers present data they can use later in their own trainings.

    Zero to Three®, a national group that supports research and training in early childhood development, came to Ada Nov. 9 and 10 to conduct a “Train the Trainer” workshop on the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (PCAN).

    Sixteen people, including child care directors, health department staff and OPAT directors from Pontotoc, Murray, Johnston and Garvin Counties, attended and are now trained to host trainings wherever they are needed in the four-county area.

    It’s not too early to begin thinking about scholarship opportunities for the 2012-13 academic year at East Central University.

    The deadline for scholarship applications for the fall 2012 and spring 2013 semesters is March 1, 2012. Applications are available in the ECU Foundation Inc. office and the ECU Student Development Office and on the ECU Foundation website at

    Steve Turner

    A reception honoring Dr. Steve Turner, vice president for administration and finance at East Central University, will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday [DEC. 7] in the Bill S. Cole University Center. The reception is open to the public.

    Turner, who also holds the title of executive assistant to the president for government relations and economic development, is leaving ECU to become president of Northeastern State University on Jan. 1.

    Jazz from Charlie Parker and the Gershwins to Stevie Wonder and Michael Bublé will be on the program when the East Central University Jazz Ensemble performs Dec. 1 [THURSDAY] in the Ataloa Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

    Shawnee attorney Terry W. West, a graduate of Francis High School who attended East Central University in 1956 and 1957, will address candidates for bachelor’s and master’s degrees during fall Commencement ceremonies on Dec. 10.

    The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in Kerr Activities Center for 217 candidates for bachelor’s degrees and 92 candidates for master’s degrees.

    West transferred from ECU to the University of Oklahoma where he completed an undergraduate degree in 1961. He earned a law degree in 1966 from the University of Tulsa Law School.

    The Oklahoma Arts Council and the Arts District of Ada are partnering to present a Town Hall Meeting for the Arts at East Central University on Nov. 30 [WEDNESDAY] to provide an overview of Council grants and programs available for organizations, schools, artists and local governments.

    The meeting will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Regents Room in ECU’s Knight Hall.
