    Dr. J. Steven Walker, East Central University director of choral activities, will be inducted into the Oklahoma Music Educators Association Hall of Fame at the OMEA Winter In-Service Conference, Jan. 21-24, 2015, in Tulsa.

    The awards are presented annually to experienced music educators who have distinguished themselves as teachers, officers in OKMEA and/or NAfME, researchers in music education and those members who have shown active political support of music education in the state and nation.

    East Central University will open the spring ECU SCREENS season with “JOHN,” a “transfixing” (Daily Telegraph) dance theatre piece, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, in the Raymond J. Estep Multimedia Center of the Bill S. Cole University Center.

    “JOHN” authentically depicts real-life stories, combining movement and spoken word to create an intense and moving theatrical experience.

    Miles Mitchell, Tiger Tank First Place Award, College Division

    ADA – East Central University senior Miles Mitchell, a business administration major from Louisville, Ky., took first place in the college division of ECU’s Tiger Tank Pitch Competition. Mitchell’s winning pitch was called SuiteSeat, an app to be used in stadiums for concession and souvenir delivery. The pitch competition was held in conjunction with ECU’s Annual Leonard Limes Lecture on Nov. 19. Presenting the $250 award to Mitchell was Mike Southard (right), president and CEO of the Ada Jobs Foundation, and Stacey Bolin, director of the Wilburn L. Smith Center for Entrepreneurship.

    Mike Turpen

    Mike Turpen, chair of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, will be the keynote speaker at East Central University’s 2014 fall commencement exercises at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Kerr Activities Center.

    Bachelor’s degrees will be awarded to 232 students while 95 others will obtain their master’s degrees during the ceremony.

    Turpen, a champion for education in Oklahoma, is perhaps best known for his weekly appearances as a political analyst on “Flashpoint with Turpen and Humphreys,” which can be seen on KFOR, channel 4, in Oklahoma City.

    Several local dancers will be performing in the Oklahoma City Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker” set for Saturday [Dec. 6] at the Ataloa Theatre of East Central University’s Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. Two performances are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and available at or at Gem Jewelers, 101 W. Main in Ada. For additional information, contact the ECU Box Office at 580-559-5751.

    Tiger Road Trip

    ADA - The East Central University football team will be participating in its first post-season competition since the 1993 season and you can make sure you are there for all the festivities, Saturday, Dec. 6, in Copperas Cove, Texas.

    The Tigers (6-4) will take on Texas A&M Commerce (8-3) at 6 the 2014 C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl in Bulldawg Stadium, with an Alumni Tailgate starting at 3 p.m. that includes a barbeque meal. Cost of the tailgate is $10 at the stadium.

    Bruce Weems

    Dr. Bruce Weems, dean of East Central University’s College of Health Sciences, was honored for his service to science education in the state.

    Weems received the Dr. Jack Renner Award by the Oklahoma Science Teachers Association (OSTA) on Friday, Oct. 31, at the Dunlap-Codding Law Firm in Oklahoma City.

    For the second year in a row, the East Central Oklahoma Regional Science Fair and Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair will be funded, thanks to the efforts of East Central University President John R. Hargrave along with Oklahoma State Sen. Susan Paddack and State Rep. Todd Thomsen.

    The $100,000 grant doubles last year’s fund, which not only covers these two particular fairs hosted by ECU, but other local and regional fairs across the state.
