    As President John Hargrave walked across the East Central University campus late at night last summer, he wondered if women students felt safe after dark.

    Hargrave became ECU's president on July 1 and lived in student housing for about two months. After working late at night, he walked the same sidewalks students would take to return to their residence halls.

    Seven students from Oklahoma's regional universities have been named Brad Henry International Scholars and will spend the spring 2010 semester participating in an international study and internship program at Swansea University in Wales.

    Former Gov. George Nigh, who was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives when he was a senior at East Central University, will deliver the Centennial Commencement address Saturday [DEC. 12] for ECU's December 2009 graduates.

    State Rep. Todd Thomsen of Ada will receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Thursday [DEC. 10] at a ceremony at East Central University.

    Dr. Glen Johnson, chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education, will present the award to Thomsen at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Ataloa Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. The public is invited.

    Juliana Overmier, an adjunct flute instructor at East Central University, has been named a prize winner in the 2009 Solo Artist Competition sponsored by the Chicago Flute Club. The competition was held at the Music Institute of Chicago in Evanston.

    The Christmas Tour of Homes on Dec. 7 [MONDAY] will feature four Ada homes decorated for the holidays along with refreshments at East Central University's Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

    New parking regulations will go into effect Tuesday [DEC. 1] for the visitor parking lot south of the University Center on the East Central University campus. The parking lot will be open only to vehicles displaying "visitor parking" permits from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

    During all other times, including weekends, the lot will be open to all parking permit types.

    The first-ever East Central University Boy Scout Merit Badge Fair on Dec. 5 [SATURDAY] will offer scouts ages 11 -18 the opportunity to either begin or complete three merit badges on the ECU campus.
