    When Tana Lala came to Latta High School as a 17-year-old exchange student, civil unrest was rampant in her native Albania and war was raging in neighboring Kosovo. So she stayed in Ada and enrolled at East Central University. The rest, as they say, is history.

    Lala went on to become the first international student to be awarded the prestigious George Nigh Award as ECU's top graduating senior. She was the 2003 recipient.

    A workshop for area teachers and East Central University students on "Dealing with Atrocity and Controversy in the Public School Classroom" will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 11 [FRIDAY] in the Regents Room in ECU's Memorial Student Union.

    After seeing the new H1N1 (swine) flu sweep through campuses throughout the country, East Central University is taking extra precautions to educate students, faculty and staff.

    Eleven ECU students have been awarded funding under the NASA National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program for the 2009-2010 academic year.

    The awards are competitive and applications are reviewed by a committee on campus. Awards are in the form of scholarship and research stipends and range from $350 to $2,000 for the academic year.

    Health care courses are being offered online and in the classroom by East Central University's Continuing Professional Education program. All classes are non-credit certification courses.

    In-class courses include EKG Technician Certification, Medical Billing and Coding Certification, Pharmacy Technician and Phlebotomy Technician Certification.

    The East Central University Physics Department is looking for all physics graduates from ECU. The department will host a Centennial Physics Alumni Reunion Oct. 30-31 to celebrate 100 Years of Physics at ECU.

    Fall enrollment at East Central University is up by 5.6 percent over fall 2008, ECU officials said. ECU has 4,633 undergraduate and graduate students this fall, or 244 more than a year ago.
