    The story of the Princess and the Pea is well-known to many.

    The East Central University School of Fine Arts’ musical production of Once Upon a Mattress tells a version of this story through song, comedy, relationships and a bit of seriousness, according to Director Kurt Edwards.

    Three performances of Once Upon a Mattress will take place on Feb. 14-16, at the Ataloa Theatre of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. Each performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

    East Central University and the School of Business are pleased to announce that ECU will once again participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program this year.

    VITA is a national program, supported by the Internal Revenue Service, which is designed to provide free tax assistance to individuals with basic tax returns, particularly those with low and fixed incomes.

    East Central University’s Norris Field is receiving a makeover in its truest sense.

    For the first time in the 80-year-plus history of the venerable football stadium, it will receive an artificial playing surface in time for the 2013 season.

    The $880,300 surface, called Revolution, comes from FieldTurf Company, according to Stan Lewis of Architects in Partnership, P.C., of Norman.

    The Vision Bank Presidential Leadership Program at East Central University was awarded a $10,000 grant from AT&T on Friday in a ceremony attended by state and university leaders.

    The Presidential Leadership Program, a comprehensive four-year program, is designed to develop extraordinary leaders. There are currently 65 students involved in the program and each year 15-20 incoming freshmen and six transfer students are invited to participate in the program.

    Jeff Baird, who has crafted inventions for the energy, oil and gas and plumbing industries, will be honored as East Central University’s 2013 Entrepreneur of the Year and will deliver the Leonard Limes Endowed Lecture at noon Friday, Feb. 15, at the Stanley Wagner Ballroom in the Memorial Student Union.

    Among Baird’s inventions is the no-clog, self-cleaning drain p-trap, called PermaFlow, in the plumbing industry and electromagnetic generator for the energy industry.

    Dr. Yasufumi Nakamori, Associate Curator of Photography for the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will be the guest speaker for the 2013 Lockmiller Lecture in Art History on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m. in the Estep Center of the Bill S. Cole University Center.

    Nakamori’s talk called For a New World to Come: Experiments in Art and Photography from 1970s Japan is based on his research for the last three years for a proposed exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, with the same title.

    East Central University students can earn six credit hours with a trip to the country of Spain during Spring Break.

    Students will depart on the trip March 15 and will return on March 25. They will earn the six ECU credit hours at the University of Extremadura, located in the city of Caceres. The cities of Madrid and Toledo will also be visited.

    The cost of the trip is approximately $2,895. The deadline has been extended until Feb. 8.

    Outstanding academic work by East Central University students have led to listings on the President’s Honor Roll and Dean’s Honor Roll for the fall semester of 2012.

    Students must complete 12 credit hours during the semester to be included on the honor roll. They cannot receive an “I” for incomplete work.
