ADA, Okla. – The Academic Success Center (ASC) at East Central University (ECU) continues to expand its free services to all undergraduate students across the ECU campus.

The ASC offers comprehensive services through The Tutoring Zone and The Writing Center.

The Tutoring Zone offers assistance in a wide range of classes that include math, science, language, history, business, political science and more. The Writing Center offers assistance during each stage of the writing process for undergraduate students, including help getting started, revising drafts and adding final touches. The Writing Center consultants do not proofread papers but help identify patterns of error and teach students how to revise effectively.

Tutoring and writing services are offered at designated times that can be found under the Current Students tab at ecok.edu.

The ASC began offering Supplemental Instruction, a specialized type of group tutoring where tutors serve as session leaders, during the Spring 2024 semester. During Supplemental Instruction sessions, the SI leaders use a variety of learning strategies to help students fully understand the material.

“Students have told us that Supplemental Instruction leaders help them understand concepts that they did not grasp during the lecture,” said Academic Success Center director, Haley Hoyt.

During the 24-25 academic year, 34% of students who attended SI earned an "A" in the course they were studying for, and 37% earned a "B."

Currently, for the Fall 2025 semester, Supplemental Instruction is available to students enrolled in General Biology, Anatomy, College Algebra and General Psychology.

The ASC also has advisors who can meet with students to discuss time management, note-taking skills, learning strategies or other study skills methods.

“Students do not need to feel bad about asking for help,” said Hoyt. “It is quite common to earn excellent grades in high school and then face challenges in college, and even students who do not feel they are struggling can still benefit from attending tutoring or going to a Supplemental Instruction session.”
