Ada, Okla. — Artist Tina Medina will present her exhibition “Hojas y Raíces (Leaves and Roots)” from Aug. 14 through Oct. 2, 2025, with an Artist Talk and Reception on Thursday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 3 p.m.
The exhibition explores Mexican American history and cultural identity in the United States. Inspired by her Texas Mexican-American farm working family, Medina’s work connects past and present using corn husk leaves as symbols of transformation and roots as symbols of history and belonging.
“Corn holds deep cultural significance in indigenous cultures across the Americas,” Medina notes. “Its use in my work ties ancient cultural roots to familial history while honoring my father’s legacy as a child farmworker.”
Medina's artwork in this exhibition thus highlights both the personal legacy of her family’s experiences and the broader impact of colonization, immigration and assimilation on Mexican American identity.
The exhibition and artist talk are free and open to the public. For more information on the artist visit TinaMedina.com. For more information about the talk and exhibit contact Sarah Engel at sengel@ecok.edu.
