East Central University in Ada, Okla. Cantu, who is majoring in physical education
with teacher certification, received the award at the ECU Department of Education’s
spring awards luncheon. Dr. Brenda Walling, chair of the department, presented the

East Central University student Rosa Denton (left) of Porum is named a Rising Star
in Early Childhood Education at the ECU Department of Education’s spring awards luncheon.
Dr. Brenda Walling, chair of the Education Department, made the presentation. Denton
also received a Dr. Donnie and Shirley Nero Scholarship that honors the ECU alums.
Nero is the retired president of Connors State College.
Gates and Forrester Named Outstanding Student Teachers in Early Childhood Education
at East Central University are Rebecca Gates (from left), Seminole, and Lacey Forrester,
Ada. They received the awards at the ECU Department of Education’s spring awards luncheon
from Dr. Phyllis Isaacs, assistant professor of education.
Kristin Sneed (left) of Seminole, an elementary education major at East Central University,
receives the Jess and Trudy Nance Scholarship at the ECU Department of Education’s
spring awards luncheon. The award, which was presented by Yvonne Bedford, instructor
of education, was created by the Nance children in honor of their parents who were
life-long educators.

Phi Alpha Theta is the national history honor society. Coates received the award at
the ECU Department of Education’s spring awards luncheon from Dr. Martha Pennington,
assistant professor of education.

Student Teachers in Communications for 2010-11 at East Central University. They received
the awards at the ECU Department of Education’s spring awards luncheon from Dr. Phyllis
Isaacs, assistant professor of education.
East Central University student Jennifer Allen (left), a special education major from
Stratford, receives the Student Oklahoma Council for Exceptional Children Outstanding
Student Award at the ECU Department of Education’s spring awards luncheon. Dr. Laura
Bixler, professor of education, made the award. Allen also received the John Lawrence
Hoggatt Memorial Scholarship for a special education student and a Georgia Howell
Limes Scholarship.

Cody Stephens (left) of Durant, an East Central University student majoring in English
with teacher certification, receives the Cephus Lawson Scholarship at the ECU Department
of Education’s spring awards luncheon in Ada. Dr. Ben Harper, professor of education,
made the presentation. Lawson’s five children, all ECU teacher education graduates,
created the scholarship as a memorial to their parents.
Camp Recipients of Dortha Fenton Scholarships at East Central University in Ada are

(right), Purcell. Dr. Rebecca Compton, professor of education, made the presentation
at the ECU Department of Education’s spring awards luncheon. Fenton’s family created
the scholarship in honor of the former principal of Glenwood Elementary School in
Ada.
