Warning Signs of Addiction
Addiction can impact anyone—regardless of age, background, or circumstance. The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services outlines several key warning signs that may indicate a person is struggling with substance use.
General Signs of Substance Use Disorder
An individual may need treatment if they exhibit one or more of the following symptoms:
-
Using drugs or alcohol in larger amounts or for longer periods than intended
-
Unsuccessful attempts to cut down or control substance use
-
Spending excessive time obtaining, using, or recovering from the substance
-
Being intoxicated or experiencing withdrawal at times when responsibilities (work, school, home) should be met
-
Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities because of substance use
-
Continuing to use despite knowing it causes or worsens physical, psychological, or social problems
-
Building a tolerance—needing significantly more of the substance to achieve the same effect
-
Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using
-
Using substances to avoid or relieve withdrawal symptoms
A diagnosis or treatment recommendation may depend on how many symptoms are present and how long they’ve persisted.
