ECU Teacher Education Program

Students interested in pursuing a career in teaching must apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program while enrolled in EDUC 2012 – Diversity in American Education.


Admission Requirements

To be admitted, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Submit Application
    Complete and submit the Admission for Teacher Education Application form. Forms are available from the Department of Education.

  • Credit Hour & GPA Requirements

    • Complete at least 36 credit hours with a minimum 2.5 GPA to enroll in EDUC 2012.

    • Must have at least 44 credit hours completed by the end of the semester.

  • General Education Coursework
    Earn a grade of “C” or better in each of the following:

    • ENG 1113 – Freshman Composition I

    • ENG 1213 – Freshman Composition II or HNRS 2313 – Enduring Questions (Honors students only)

    • COMM 1113 – Fundamentals of Human Communication

    Note: Students may be enrolled in these courses at the time of application but must meet grade requirements before progressing to Professional Block II.

  • Faculty Interview
    Receive a satisfactory recommendation from the education faculty interview committee.

  • Field Experience
    Provide documentation of experience working with children or youth. Completion or concurrent enrollment in EDUC 2211 – Field I satisfies this requirement.

  • Background Check
    Submit a clear background check free of felony convictions. All background checks must be approved by the Department of Education.

  • Meet State Requirements
    Fulfill one of the criteria outlined in OSRHE 3.21.3 (as stated in the OSRHE Academic Affairs Policy and Procedures Manual).


Appeals Process

  • A written appeal may be submitted to the Teacher Education Committee for reconsideration.
  • Appeal procedures are available upon request from the Director of Teacher Education.

Students who are denied may also choose to submit a new application at a later date.
