East Central University is excited to offer Mapping Water Stories, a five-day 24-hour supervised residential summer academy for 35 Oklahoma students in grades 8-12, June 5-June 9, 2023.

This summer academy provides hands-on learning opportunities about water from scientific, environmental, and cultural perspectives. Students will visit local lakes and streams to collect water data and learn how to create a Geographic Information System (GIS) map in an ECU GIS computer lab.

All meals will be provided and gas cards will be provided for transportation expenses to and from ECU.

Each day, students will engage in interactive science-related activities. Because water samples will be collected, students should feel comfortable in the water.

Mapping Water Stories is working with Blue Thumb, a program through the Oklahoma Conservation Commission, Kerr Environmental Research Center, and The Oka Institute. Field trips will be taken to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and the Chickasaw Cultural Center located in Sulphur.

The Academy is funded through the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.
