A workshop about current educational benefits for veterans along with highlights of the new GI Bill will be held July 29 [TUESDAY] at East Central University in Ada.

ECU's Veterans Upward Bound Program will host the VA Educational Benefits Workshop for veterans and their families from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Estep Multimedia Center on the first floor of the University Center. A representative from the VA Muskogee Regional Office's Educational Benefits Department will make the presentation and answer questions before and after the workshop.

Tables with information about VA educational benefits will be set up in the University Center from noon to 6 p.m. Information about the Veterans Upward Bound program and how to apply for and use those benefits at ECU also will be available.

VUB helps with preparatory classes and seminars for veterans.

The workshop will touch on new benefits that the Post 9/11 GI Bill will implement in August 2009. The benefits will include a possible one-time payment of $500 for certain individuals relocating from highly rural areas, a books and supplies stipend up to $1,000 a year, a monthly stipend for living expenses, based on local BAH for E-5 with dependents (an average of $1,000 a month), and transfer benefits for spouses and dependents.
