Physics examines the fundamental principles that govern matter, energy, motion, forces, electricity, magnetism, heat, light, sound, and the structure of the universe.
ECU Physics students use mathematics, experimentation, and computational methods to investigate scientific problems. The analytical and problem-solving abilities developed through the study of physics can be applied in engineering, medicine, astronomy, technology, education, computer science, industry, and many other fields.
Students have access to physics laboratory equipment, computer resources, and ECU’s on-campus observatory, which includes a 14-inch telescope and several additional telescopes.

Physics Degree Options

Bachelor of Science in Physics

The Bachelor of Science in Physics provides a strong foundation in theoretical and applied physics. Students develop advanced skills in mathematics, laboratory investigation, scientific reasoning, and quantitative problem-solving.
The program prepares graduates for employment in technical and scientific fields or for advanced study in physics, engineering, mathematics, astronomy, and related disciplines.

Physics | Medical Physics Concentration

The Medical Physics concentration connects physics with medicine and healthcare technology. Students study the scientific principles behind diagnostic imaging, radiation therapy, medical instrumentation, and other applications of physics in patient care.
This concentration is designed to prepare students for graduate study in medical physics or related scientific and healthcare fields.

Physics | Teacher Certification Concentration

This concentration prepares students to teach physics and related physical sciences at the secondary level. Students complete coursework in physics along with the professional education requirements needed for teacher certification.

Physics Minor

The Physics minor provides additional preparation in physics and quantitative problem-solving for students majoring in mathematics, chemistry, computer science, biology, environmental science, or another related field.

Pre-Engineering Preparation

Students interested in engineering can begin building a strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and other supporting sciences at ECU. Students should work closely with an academic advisor to select courses appropriate for their intended engineering field and transfer institution.
