Earthquake Preparedness and Response
While earthquakes in Oklahoma are rare, East Central University is committed to keeping our campus community safe. Please review the following guidelines in the event of seismic activity.
During an Earthquake
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck under a desk or sturdy furniture, and hold on until shaking stops.
- Stay Indoors: Do not run outside. Move away from windows, mirrors, and anything that could fall.
- If Outdoors: Move away from buildings, trees, and power lines. Stay in the open until the shaking stops.
- If Driving: Pull over safely, away from overpasses and structures. Stay in the vehicle until the shaking ends.
After an Earthquake
- Check for Injuries: Administer first aid and report serious injuries to emergency services.
- Avoid Hazards: Watch for gas leaks, broken glass, and downed power lines. Do not use elevators.
- Expect Aftershocks: Be prepared for additional tremors. Follow the same safety procedures.
- Follow Official Instructions: Monitor ECU alerts, website updates, or emergency personnel guidance.
