Suicide Intervention Policy

East Central University

At East Central University, the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff are of the highest importance. This Suicide Intervention Policy outlines the steps ECU takes to respond to individuals in crisis and provides guidance on how our campus community can help protect those at risk of suicide or self-harm.

If You Believe Someone is in Immediate Danger:

  • Call 911 or the ECU Police Department at 580-559-5555.
  • Do not leave the person alone. Stay with them unless you are in danger.
  • If it feels unsafe to remain, remove yourself from the situation and call for help immediately.

Recognizing a Crisis

A person may be in crisis if they:

  • Talk about wanting to die or expressing hopelessness
  • Show severe emotional distress or sudden mood changes
  • Withdraw from friends, classes, or activities
  • Express feelings of being a burden or having no reason to live
  • Make threats or appear to have a plan for self-harm

What To Do If You're Concerned

  • Take all threats seriously.
  • Contact ECU Police (580-559-5555) or a campus resource listed below.
  • Listen without judgment. Express concern and support.
  • Encourage the person to seek help and offer to accompany them if appropriate.

After the Crisis

Following an incident involving suicide risk or behavior:

  • ECU administration will coordinate with appropriate departments (such as Student Affairs, Human Resources, or Counseling) to ensure follow-up care and determine the best support for the individual.
  • The university may enact temporary safety measures, wellness plans, or refer individuals to off-campus treatment when needed.

Your Role in Prevention

We all have a role in keeping our campus safe. If you see something concerning, speak up. Your action could save a life.

If you are unsure how to respond or need guidance, contact the ECU Counseling Center for confidential consultation and resources.
