SUMMARY

Will have standard horticultural and grounds keeping practices and knowledge. The use and maintenance of grounds keeping tools and equipment will be required. Coordinates assigned staff and performs a full range of grounds maintenance, gardening duties, assists in related various construction and landscaping projects by supervising and assisting the grounds staff. This position is also responsible for the ECU Events crew and crew leader.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•    At the direction of the Assistant Director of Physical Plant, oversees the groundskeepers in the maintenance and care for school grounds.
•    Supervises and directs the Grounds employees in daily grounds maintenance and event duties.
•    Maintains and cares for university grounds by supervising the mowing of university grounds with hand and power mowers, pruning trees and trimming hedges to promote growth and improve appearance.
•    Applies fertilizers and weed control chemicals as directed by Assistant Director of Physical Plant.
•    Connects sprinkling equipment and waters lawns, athletic fields, and flower beds.
•    Adjusts and repairs such equipment as lawnmowers, sprinklers, and hedge shears.
•    Inspects flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns for evidence of insects, fungi and other pests and reports Assistant Director of Physical Plant.
•    Collects and disposes of leaves and refuse.
•    During winter, assists in the plowing of snow from sidewalks, driveways, and spreads sand or salt as needed.
•    Ensures pressure washing and related outdoor cleaning projects get done as needed.
•    Ensures adequate supplies, materials and equipment are maintained in department.
•    Ensures the operational readiness and safety of equipment such as mowers, tillers, sweepers, snow blowers, edgers, shovels, and small vehicles. Performs routine assembly, cleaning and maintenance of equipment as needed.
•    Assists in the maintenance of outdoor fields and athletic facilities.
•    Handles emergency situations that might occur. When necessary, contacts Assistant Director of Physical Plant
•    Complies with all Federal, state and local laws and regulations for the storage, use and disposal of trash, rubbish, waste and hazardous material [OSHA].
•    Complies with all Federal, state and local laws and regulations for the maintenance, repair and operation of equipment and machines [OSHA].
 •    Drive University-owned vehicles, as required for performance of assigned duties.
•    Must be willing to be on-call at certain times
•    Must have a strong work ethic and lead by example.
•    Must be a professional, credible and respected representative of the institution internally and in the community
•    Demonstrated willingness and ability to act ethically and socially responsible
•    Must be able to lift more than 50-lb. objects; frequent bending, stooping, and walking.
•    Can be exposed to a variety of weather conditions for periods of time.
•    Ability to communicate in a courteous manner
•    Performs Other work-related duties as assigned by Assistant Director of Physical Plant or designee.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill, and/ or ability required.

 

•    Ability to understand and follow directions as given. Ability to read labels and instructions for proper use of equipment and chemicals used in ground maintenance.
•    General knowledge of grounds maintenance practices; of the methods and techniques for cultivating, planting, mowing, and caring for lawns, gardens, shrubs, and trees; of procedures for mixing and applying pesticides and other chemicals.
•    Thorough knowledge of and skill in the operation and proper care of assigned hand and power tools and equipment.
•    Skill in organizing and coordinating the grounds maintenance work; in providing guidance and instruction to groundskeepers.
•    Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations; to follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively; to supervise and train groundskeepers; to operate and perform minor maintenance on assigned hand and power tools and equipment; to perform work in, on, around, under and over trees, shrubs, buildings and facilities; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and frequent heavy lifting; to work in adverse weather conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
•    Basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows computer operating systems.
•    Public relations skills to deal with the coordination of efforts between departments and with outside contractors.
•    Ability to read and understand equipment instructions, operating manuals, and repair procedures.
•    Positive oral and written communication skills.
•    Access to a residential and/or cellular telephone.
•    Ability to work irregular hours, as required.
•    Work from ladders, and work in non-permitted confined spaces.
•    Have a valid Oklahoma State driver’s license.
•    Must be a team leader and motivator
 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A high school diploma or training and experience that are considered equivalent. Five years progressive experience is required. Ability to operate power lawn mowers, trimmers and other grounds maintenance equipment. Two years at a supervisory level. Supervisory experience in industrial or grounds maintenance is preferred.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

 

Language skills

Must be able to orally communicate in fluent English, using a two-way radio system. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; and implement verbal and written instructions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
