General Education at ECU

Launched Fall 2023

East Central University’s new General Education program helps students build a strong academic foundation while exploring diverse fields of study. Designed by ECU faculty, the program is flexible, transfer-friendly, and aligned with essential skills valued by today’s employers.

Through this program, all students develop five core learning outcomes:

  • Communication – Express ideas effectively across multiple platforms and for diverse audiences.

  • Critical Thinking – Analyze and evaluate information to make reasoned decisions and solve problems.

  • Information Literacy – Locate, use, and share information ethically and effectively in a digital world.

  • Intercultural Knowledge & Competence – Understand how culture and identity shape perspectives and interactions.

  • Global Citizenship – Explore complex global systems and engage responsibly at all levels of society.

Note: Students enrolled before Fall 2023 will continue under the previous general education requirements. Please consult your academic advisor for details on how these updates may impact your degree path.
