Flutist Juliana Overmier, an adjunct instructor of music at East Central University, will perform a concert with accompanist Dr. Samuel Magrill at 3 p.m. Sunday [NOV. 9] in Lindsay.

The Lindsay Civic Arts Council will present the free concert at the United Methodist Church, 114 W. Chickasaw Street in Lindsay. A reception will follow.

Overmier will perform works ranging from the Baroque to the contemporary, including several virtuosic showpieces. Composers to be performed include Bach, Jolivet, Schwantner, Breville, Boëhm and Saint-Saëns.

She has won first prize in several competitions including the 2007 Byron Hester Solo Flute Competition in Houston, the James Pappoutsakis Memorial Flute Competition in Boston and the Concours Artistique Lucien Wurmser in France. She also received a Gold Medal at the Bourg-la-Reine/Sceaux Conservatory in France.

Overmier earned a master of music degree from the University of Southern California. She has recorded for several film scores, including "As Good As It Gets" and "Halloween H20." She is a member of the Tulsa Opera Orchestra and also performs with the Tulsa Symphony. She was principal flutist for the Light Opera of Oklahoma Orchestra in Tulsa for the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

She has performed with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, the former Tulsa Philharmonic, the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus and the Tulsa Ballet orchestra. In addition to her freelance playing and private teaching studio, Overmier is a member of the Cimarron Wind Quintet, serves as community outreach chair for the Oklahoma Flute Society and is a frequent clinician and adjudicator for musical organizations statewide.

Magrill is composer-in-residence and a full professor in the School of Music at the University of Central Oklahoma where he has taught music theory and composition since 1988. He previously taught at the University of Wyoming and California State University, Long Beach. He received a bachelor of music degree in composition from Oberlin Conservatory and a master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees in composition from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
