ECU OFFERING YOGA CLASSES DURING YOGA MONTH

September is Yoga Month, and East Central University participates by starting its fall beginning and gentle yoga classes this week. Sessions for beginners start on Wednesday [SEPT. 7] from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. on the ECU campus.  The hour-long gentle class starts at 7 p.m.

Instructor Rebecca Gatz teaches the beginner’s class, but says that most people are beginners for years.

ECU MUSIC FACULTY PERFORMING THURSDAY AT ARTS, HERITAGE CENTER

Soloists from East Central University’s music faculty will perform a Faculty Showcase concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday [SEPT. 1] at the Ada Arts and Heritage Center. The concert will feature works by Rossini, Stravinsky, Massenet, Ginastera, Schultz and Garcia. Admission is free.           

Faculty members who will perform are Mark Hollingsworth, clarinet; Starla Hibler, piano; Alan Marshall, baritone; W.T. Skye Garcia, piano; Becky Morrison, soprano; Bart Morrison, piano; Melody Baggech, soprano; and Susanne Woolley, violin.

GROUP BRINGING CAR SEATS, PASSENGER EDUCATION TO ADA AUG. 25

In an effort to reduce motor vehicle-related deaths and injury, the leading killer of children under 14, Safe Kids Oklahoma will sponsor a car seat checkup event from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday [Aug. 25] during Family Fun Night at Wintersmith Park in Ada.

The car seat checkup will be held in collaboration with Smart Start South Central, the Chickasaw Nation, ECU Child Care Resource and Referral, East Central University and Ada Regional United Way.            

HARTSHORNE STUDENT WINS AWARD AT ECU

Kevin Danel (center) of Hartshorne is named the Outstanding Student in Management Information Systems at East Central University. The presentation was made at the School of Business’ annual awards banquet by Wendell Godwin (left), dean of ECU’s School of Business, and Randy Harp, a 2004 ECU Distinguished Alumnus and the co-chief executive officer, chief operating officer and president of Pre-Paid Legal Services Inc. in Ada. Danel also received a scholarship for 2011-12, the Kenneth Rhynes Memorial Award, at the banquet last spring. 

DAVIS STUDENT AT ECU WINS SCHOLARSHIP

Christopher Dalley (right) of Davis, a student at East Central University, is congratulated by Wendell Godwin, dean of ECU’s School of Business, for receiving the Charles Fletcher Endowed Accounting Scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year that began Aug. 15. Dalley received the scholarship last spring at the school’s annual awards luncheon.

NASA FELLOWSHIPS AWARDED TO ECU STUDENTS

Seventeen East Central University students have been awarded funding under the NASA National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program for the 2011-12 academic year.

The awards are competitive and applications are reviewed by a committee on campus. Awards are in the form of scholarship and research stipends and range from $800 to $2,000 for the academic year.

CLASSES BEGIN MONDAY AT EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY

Classes will begin Monday [AUG. 15] at East Central University. Enrollment remains near the record number set last fall, and residence halls are almost full. The last day to enroll is Friday [AUG. 19].
