CLASSICAL GUITARIST OPENS ECU FINE ARTS SEASON

Classically trained guitarist Brad Richter is set to open the fine arts season at East Central University’s Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center on Sept. 6 [Thursday], at 7:30 p.m. in the Ataloa Theatre. Richter’s performance is being hosted in conjunction with the Ada Arts Council. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at tickets.ecok.edu; by calling 580-559-5751; at Gem Jewelers, located at 101 W. Main; or at the box office the night of the show.

NEW FACULTY ANNOUNCED AT EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY FOR 2012-13

Eighteen new instructors have been added to East Central University’s faculty as the institution embarks on the 2012-13 school term.

New faculty members are:

Dr. Kelly Clasen
Lecturer of English and Languages
Dr. Clasen’s teaching approach is grounded in current composition theory, thus providing her with a range of rhetorical strategies in the classroom since this position requires instruction at ECU in English Composition I and II classes only.

EARLY SETTLEMENT-EAST CENTRAL PROGRAM HELPS MEDIATE DISPUTES

At East Central University, there’s an outlet for settling disputes.

The program, known as Early Settlement-East Central, helps area residents by providing mediators to assist with conflict resolution. The Early Settlement program trains volunteers, who become well versed in dispute resolution skills. These volunteers ultimately obtain certification through the Oklahoma Supreme Court to serve the community as mediators.

Season tickets are on sale from now until Sept. 6 for the 2012-2013 East Central University Fine Arts Season at the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center on the ECU campus.

The season ticket package, at a cost of $140, includes seven national touring shows, four ECU Theatre productions and all ECU vocal and instrumental concerts along with national/local art shows.

GRANDSON OF TOBACCO TITAN TO SPEAK ABOUT TOBACCO-FREE AMERICA AT EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY CAMPUS ON THURSDAY, AUG. 30

Patrick Reynolds, founder and executive director of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free America, will speak on the East Central University campus on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m.

The event, which is hosted by the STOP Coalition (Stomp Tobacco Outta Pontotoc County) in conjunction with the ECU-Brandon Whitten Institute, will be held at the Estep Multimedia Center, located in the Bill S. Cole University Center.

Reynolds, the grandson of tobacco titan R.J. Reynolds, has been an acclaimed speaker who motivates, inspires, entertains and educates youth toward a smoke-free society.

FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS INSPIRED AT EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY’S OKLAHOMA BUSINESS WEEK

Inspiring business leaders of tomorrow was the goal of Oklahoma Business Week and the foundation was established at the first-ever event on the East Central University campus, July 8-13.

High School seniors, juniors and sophomores converged on the ECU campus to gain a firsthand experience in the world of business. Students got a chance to interact and learn from community business leaders as well as gain skills in leadership, communication, team-building, responsibility, money management, entrepreneurship, marketing and more.

UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM GETS FIVE-YEAR GRANT RENEWAL AT EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY

East Central University’s Upward Bound program has received a five-year grant renewal to partner with 12 area high schools in helping low-income individuals and potential first-generation college students pursue and obtain a higher-education degree.

EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY ALUMNI REUNIONS SCHEDULED FOR OKLAHOMA CITY, ADA

Two East Central University alumni reunions are scheduled this month. The first is set for Oklahoma City on Saturday, Aug. 11, and the second will be held in Ada, Friday, Aug. 17.

The ECU Oklahoma City Area Alumni Reunion will be held in the Remington Suite of Remington Park, beginning at 6 p.m. Transportation will be provided from ECU to Oklahoma City for alums wanting to attend the event during the opening weekend of thoroughbred horse racing.

FOUR ECU PROFESSORS AWARDED WITH TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Four East Central University professors were awarded with the prestigious Teaching Excellence Award during the Evening of Faculty Recognition late last spring.

The 2011-12 winners were Dr. Michael Bay, professor of Biology; Dr. Marc Klippenstine, assistant professor of Psychology; Dr. Shirley Mixon, professor of Business and ECU’s Director of the Oklahoma Reach Higher Program; and Dr. Regina Robertson, professor of Human Resources.
