TOM HIDDLESTON STARS IN ‘CORIOLANUS’ TO BE PRESENTED BY ECU SCREENS

ECU SCREENS opens its spring season with Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus” at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Raymond J. Estep Multimedia Center of the Bill S. Cole University Center.

One of Shakespeare’s greatest works, “Coriolanus” is “a fast, witty, intelligent production” (Guardian).

ECU SCREENS is collaborating with Sigma Tau Delta and The Honors Student Association to show the “compelling” (Time Out) NT Live broadcast of the Donmar Warehouse production of Coriolanus. Open to the public, the screening is free for ECU students and $10 for members of the community.

Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge, “Coriolanus” features an Evening Standard Award-winning performance from Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers,” “War Horse” (film), BBC's “The Hollow Crown”) in the title role, directed by the Donmar's Artistic Director Josie Rourke. Lauded by critics, the production is “unfailingly vivid – intelligent, brisk and brutal (Metro) and Hiddleston “delivers a powerhouse performance” (Daily Telegraph).

When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus. But he has enemies at home too. Famine threatens the city, the citizens’ hunger swells to an appetite for change and, on returning from the field, Coriolanus must confront the march of realpolitik and the voice of an angry people.

Coriolanus” is the first in a series of foreign films and NT Live productions that will be presented by ECU SCREENS this spring. NT Live is the National Theatre's groundbreaking project to broadcast the best of British theatre to cinemas around the world. ECU SCREENS will present seven productions, including four different Royal National Theater recorded-live stage performances, throughout the spring semester. The screenings, which range from classic literary masterpieces to popular contemporary works, are all open to the public.
