Two area 5th grade teachers, participants in the Teaching American History Grant projects coordinated by the Center for Advancement of American History at East Central University, made presentations at the National Council for History Education's annual conference April 3 in Louisville.

Barbara Heilaman, Konawa, and Rebecca Henderson, Byng, gave an introduction and glimpse of their series of lessons on leadership, titled "What Makes a Leader: The Rest of the Stories," to an overflow crowd of more than 60 educators from all over the country.

The set of five lessons introduces elementary students to the qualities of a good leader, covers the lives of five unique leaders in U.S. history, and encourages students to begin to think about their future leadership roles.

Center staff members Kevin Lynch and Richard Cooper were part of the team that developed the presentation and also attended the conference. Teachers interested in the leadership lessons can contact Cooper at 580-559-5326.
