Four East Central University professors were awarded with the prestigious Teaching Excellence Award during the Evening of Faculty Recognition late last spring.

The 2011-12 winners were Dr. Michael Bay, professor of Biology; Dr. Marc Klippenstine, assistant professor of Psychology; Dr. Shirley Mixon, professor of Business and ECU’s Director of the Oklahoma Reach Higher Program; and Dr. Regina Robertson, professor of Human Resources.

To be eligible for the awards, a professor must be nominated and then prepare a portfolio to be reviewed by the Teaching Excellence Committee. Nominees are rated on nine different criteria, including teaching evaluations and supporting letters from current and former students.

The recipients receive a plaque and a $500 prize.

“Reading letters from former students is touching because you can really see that educators have the ability to transform students’ lives,” said Teaching Excellence Committee Chair Dr. Christine Pappas. “It’s a joy to serve on this committee because the members get to see all of the excellent work being accomplished by the ECU faculty. The hardest thing is selecting the winners.”

This fall Teaching Excellence Award winners will present a panel discussion to share their best practices of teaching on the ECU campus.
