East Central University’s Education Department is offering a new teacher certification program designed to improve mathematics and teaching skills.

The Elementary Mathematics Specialist certification is an 18-hour program intended for current elementary or early childhood teachers.

Completion of this program and a passing score on the Oklahoma Elementary Specialist examination will result in an Elementary Mathematics Specialist certification. To qualify for the program, candidates must have a valid teacher certification in elementary education and/or early childhood education and must have completed two years of full-time teaching in grades PK-5.

The first course in the sequence, EDUC 5983 Number Concepts, will be offered at ECU during the evenings of winter intercession which begins Dec. 17. The other five courses will be offered in the May intercession, summer and fall semesters.

The certification program is designed to be completed in one calendar year.
