Proof will be East Central University’s first theatrical production of the 2014-2015 fine arts season on Oct. 9-11 at the Chalmers Herman Theatre, inside the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

Each performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. The play is rated mature for explicit language.

Proof, by David Auburn, was the winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a 2001 Tony Award for Best Play. It was made into a movie in 2005, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jake Gyllenhaal and Hope Davis.

The play centers on Catherine on the eve of her 25th birthday, mourning the death of her brilliant mathematician father, concerned that she might inherit his mental instability, and dealing with the arrival of her sister, who has come for the funeral, and dad’s former student, Hal, who is searching through his works in hopes of finding a new mathematical discovery.

A possible romance, a sister who wants to “take care” of her as she took care of her father, the discovery of a mysterious notebook and Catherine’s own fears add together for a compelling drama. The title refers not only to a mathematical proof, but how we find ourselves having to prove ourselves even to those with whom we are closest.

The cast includes Catherine, who will be portrayed by Annette Lorraine Wright of Okmulgee; Robert, played by Wyatt Freeman of Lone Grove; Hal, portrayed by Keegan Buckaloo of Sallisaw and Claire, played by Miranda McNabb of Bristow.

The play is directed by Dr. Richard Groetzinger and the stage manager is Benjamin Eckert of Ada.
