East Central University’s Wind Ensemble and Symphonic band will present music of Karrick, Sousa and Sparke during its Midwinter Concert on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. in the Dorothy Summers Theatre.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The Symphonic Band will be performing “Critical Mass” by Doug Stalter, “Nettleton” by Johnnie Vinson and “Urban Dances” by Eril Morales.
The Wind Ensemble is performing the first movement of “A Sacred Suite” by Brant Karrick, “Riders for the Flag” by Sousa and “Hymn of the Highlands” by Philip Sparke.
Sparke’s “Hymn of the Highlands” was originally written for the European Brass Band Championships in 2002 and has since been transcribed for wind bands by the composer. The entire suite comprises three movements for wind bands. All of the movements are named after locations in the Scottish Highlands – Andross Castle, Alladale and the exciting final movement, Dundonnell, starts in a martial mood but soon break into a wild presto with a lot of notes.
